Down with pennies

The penny should not exist. It has served its purpose and it's time for retirement. A Canadian penny is currently worth 0.81 cents US, or 0.45 UK pence. It's just not worth it. And to make things worse, pennies make your hands smell bad. (Well, all coins do that, but pennies most of all).
We don't need them. I want retailers to start rounding things to the nearest 5 cents. I can't think of a single reason why a retailer couldn't make it stated policy that all transactions are rounded to the nearest nickle.
Would you appreciate it if they did that for us?
(We'll try convincing them to post the after-tax price later)...

Posted by: westcoastloonI'm with you on posting the after tax price. I've heard that the argument against it is that They (the government) can hide the actual amount of tax being paid. But seeing as there's very little we can do to change the amount of tax being charged what's the point? I'd much rather know exactly how much I was spending without trying to calculate 14% in my head.

Posted by: SarahThey got rid of 1 and 2 cent coins in Australia about 10 years ago, and now round to the nearest 5 cents. It works really well!!! They also only post the after-tax price and its even better. You can have exact change ready to go even before you get to the cashier. And no nasty shocks when 14% gets added on to your purchase. Not that I'm whingeing about Canada, because I love Canada.
