Rosa Parks died yesterday...

I heard on the radio this mornign that Rosa Parks died yesterday at the age of 92. It seems odd, but it had never actually occured to me that she was still alive. She was and is a historical icon. It seems odd somehow that she was still in the same world as me up until yesterday...

Ok weird, I had EXACTLY the same thought when I heard about Rosa Parks this morning. I had no idea she was still alive. It's so strange to think that it was only 50 years ago that a black woman was not allowed to sit in a certain seat on the bus. Can it be so recently that the old rules still applied?

Yeah it's really strange to think that that only happened 50 years ago. No wonder we still have a long way to go!

What an amazing lady - I need to get a biography on her.

I'm reading a biography about "Condi" Rice - accomplished, concert pianist, scholar, etc etc. It is quite interesting to read about how her parents protected her from being segregated, while growing up in Alabama. They did not take her on segregated trains or buses, or let her use segregated public bathrooms, etc. This has had a positive impact on how she views race relations.
Anyhow, her story is quite inspiring. She grew up extremely well educated and disciplined, by parents who told her she could be the president of the United States is she wanted. (But she just couldn't use public bathrooms. :))
