What I'd like from the CBC...

The CBC is publicly owned and publicly funded.

So why can I not download videos produced by the CBC off the internet? Why can I not download mp3's of their radio programmes? The CBC owns the copyright on all the programming and footage they produce, so they could put it on their website. If they're concerned about their footage being ripped off by other news organizations, they could easily put a limited license on it. No problem.

Bandwidth isn't a real concern either. They don't have to stream it all off their website. Put up a BitTorrent link. I can't think of a legitimate reason not to do this. Can anyone else?

Edit: January 22 2005
What on earth was I thinking yesterday? Lazy saturdays should never be that lazy. Somewhere between typing CBC and the word public I mixed up the the acronyms CBC and CPB in my mind. Not the same thing. I obviously need to proof read my posts better. I've removed the reference my initial reference to the CPB.

largely its because the musicians that are paid for performances ( and I assume actors too) are being paid on the assumption that CBC will use the work once or twice or whatever, and the union crap says that anything else requires payment, I think.
I know. dumb. but thats why we can't get copies of our performances. so lame.

I actually wasn't thinking of the musicians on Radio 2. A lot of the the broadcasting on Radio 2 isn't original programming anyway, so the CBC won't own the copyright.

So let's leave musicians out of it. You make a very good point. I was mostly thinking of things like their election debate coverage and other material that one might consider a public service. Like Priya Ramu's interview with John Redekop last week. I can't even find a reference to it on the programmes website.

Why is this? There isn't even some sort of "past material" list, let alone a podcast of the show.

Some material is available on the internet. The leaders debates, (an obvious choice), is available in a low resolution Real Media format if you know where to look. Real Media of course being a closed format that can only be viewed with Real Player. I'm not even going to get into why installing Real Player on your computer is a bad idea. Strangely enough, the CBC does have QuickTime videos, but the debate is only available in Real format.

Why is the CBC not hosting a torrent for distributed download of a high resolution copy in multiple formats. Why is it easier to get a pirated copy of the latest Hollywood films that a decent copy of the election debates?
