Google announced this week that they’re not going to be supporting FTP for publishing on blogger anymore. Apparently the option isn’t that popular and consumes a disproportionate amount of resources. Unfortunately, I need it if I want to continue to use a separate web host and a private domain. I could switch to Google hosting, but I’d rather not do that.
So I started looking at WordPress. I think it will work fine, although I’m not happy with how it looks just yet. I can customize any of the templates, but I don’t have a great starting point yet. If anyone’s got any suggestions or opinions about how it looks, please let me know.
The old blogger posts are still there, but I haven’t gone through the trouble of trying to import them into WordPress because I don’t see any need to do that. They’re still there, you can still comment on them and I can still edit them for now. You can see the last few posts here and the archive is on the side bar.
I think you’ll like WP — we use a custom install of it for everything a work and it’s incredibly user-friendly. I don’t know if it will annoy you if you’re more used to tinkering under the hood but we’ve had great success with it. (We’re currently housing a 4000+ page site in WP and for the most post it works beautifully.) I keep meaning to switch my personal blog over but haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I’ll miss the rants. I wonder if you need a more adventurous noun than “musings” for your title. . .but so many of the other options are long &/or prone to being pretentious (Issachar’s Genius Ramblings for example
It’s good to see you writing more.
Maybe a title that tied in to your tagline would work, something like Issachar Says It Out Loud or Issachar Puts it in Writing — something that mentions the idea that you’re blogging here so you have to defend your own politics (which is both admirable and rare). On the other hand, I am on a decent amount of painkillers to ward off the last of this migraine so maybe you should just ignore this
Or Issachar can’t be bothered to write anything on his blog.
